Phulwari felt on edge as she mopped the wall of her mud house. It was summer. The raging heat of the day rose from the patio as the sun whipped down. Her silky, yellow saree with floral prints glittered like small, minute pieces of fluorescent confetti. The long, loose end of the robe was draped around her shoulders and tucked into the petticoat. She drew hasty arcs on the wall with a piece of wet fabric. Sarita, her mother-in-law, was washing clothes at the edge of the courtyard. Phulwari
